Protest in Asaba over alleged NOUN’s refusal to release results
The alleged refusal to release results of students, who graduated at the National Open University (NOUN) Asaba study centre, yesterday sparked off protest.

The protesters, many of whom were Masters and Post Graduate Diploma students, alleged that since 2014/2015 when they completed their programmes including project works, their results and certificates were yet to be released.

Armed with placards with inscriptions such as “Give us our results, release our certificates, we are tired of excuses, NOUN do something for our certificates,” the protesters went round various streets of Asaba and ended at the gate of the centre where NOUN officials assured them that their request would be attended to.Leader of the protesters, Mr. John Olomeh, alleged that authorities of NOUN had paid deaf ears to their request in the release of their certificates over times before they embarked on the protest.

“Officials of NOUN, Asaba study centre had been telling us stories that the Senate had not approved the results, since 2014/2015. We are tired, we need our results, or we shall embark on another protest soon.”
                                       
Some officials who did not want their names in print, said the delay in the release of the 2014/2015 Master’s Degree, Post Graduate Diploma certificates was owing to inexplicable logistics, assuring that in no distant time, the results would be released.

Also, students of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, (FUOYE) yesterday went on rampage over alleged extortion by the management of the institution.

The students who barricaded the main gate of the institution, alleged that one Dr. Malomo, a lecturer and acting Dean, Students
Affairs, was the arrowhead of the extortion racket.

The students alleged that N500 was collected from them in the name of organising tutorial without issuing receipts.

They demanded the immediate removal of the acting dean and reinstatement as well extension of the tenure of the outgoing Dean, Students Affairs, Dr. Olugbenga Adeyemi.

The protesters later removed the barricade while the speaker of the Students Representative Council, Victor Akinnibosun and Dr. Olugbenga Adeyemi, read the resolutions reached with the management.

The University’s Public Relations Officer, (PRO), Mr. Godfrey Bakji, said the management was ready to meet with the demands of the protesters.

An attempt to get Malomo’s reaction was not successful as his mobile phone was switched off.

ile-ife explosion
No fewer than 14 people including women and children died yesterday in a ghastly road accident in Ile-Ife, Osun State.The victims were burnt beyond recognition as the 18-passenger bus conveying them from Ore, in Ondo State to Ibadan ran into a fuel laden tanker and exploded immediately.

The Guardian learnt that the bus carried some engine blocks, which contributed to the trapping of the passengers when it hit the truck.The accident, said to have occurred at about 12 noon in front of a fuel station, some metres from the main gate of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile –Ife attracted sympathisers who made futile effort to rescue the victims.

Eyewitness account said the truck was trying to
enter a nearby filling station to empty its content but the driver of the bus suddenly lost control and rammed into the truck , which caused a spark and an explosion.


An eyewitness, Mutiu Oladele Mutiu, attributed the fault to the driver of the bus with Lagos Registration Number: MUS702 XH.Oladele said the passengers were trapped and people around on rescue mission became helpless while the situation had already gotten out of hand before men of the fire fighters and Federal Road Service Corps (FRSC) arrived the scene.


However, three passengers were said to have been rescued and taken alive to the Seventh-Day Adventist Hospital, Ile Ife but one of them
reportedly died on arrival.

The charred bodies of the victims were taken to the morgue of the Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC).The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Osun State, Anthony Oko, confirmed the incident.

No fewer than 700 suspected cultists and 38 suspected armed robbers were arrested in different parts of Anambra in the last three weeks, Garba Umar, the state commissioner of police, has said. Umar told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, July 23 in Awka that the arrests were clear signal thatAnambra was no longer a safe haven for criminals. “This number of arrests within three weeks to me was unprecedented and we will sustain the tempo until we flush out all the bad eggs in the state,’’ he said. He said that the police recovered several types of arms and ammunition from the suspects. The commissioner said that some of the suspects had been arraigned, while the command was still investigating cases leveled against others. He said that additional personnel had been deployed in Anambra by the Inspector-General (IG) to beef up the existing security in the state.

Umar said that the command had created 20 new units and deployed its personnel to various flash points across the state. “I personally patrol some of these locations to ensure efficient operations. I am not an arm chair police commissioner. “I move round myself to make sure that things are done the right way for security of lives and property of residents,” Umar said. Umar warned those who were in the habit of operating in offices and residential houses, especially around the Government House, Awka axis, to desist. He said that the command had set its dragnet in every location in the state; especially Awka, the capital, and that any person or group caught would be severely dealt with.

“We have the mechanism to checkmate the activities of our men; both the Inspector General and Commissioner of Police monitoring units are working hard. “We gave out our telephone numbers to the public to report any case of extortion and act of incivility and misconduct to us. The commissioner also advised the people of the state to disregard threats by any group that the forthcoming November 18 governorship election in Anambra would not hold. “We learnt that there are some disgruntled elements making some pronouncements against the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that people should boycott the Nov.18 governorship election in the state. “The group can say whatever they like, but the police and other security agents have a duty to secure the nation and as well ensure that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is protected. “Where offences are committed; we will enforce the laws handed over to us for enforcement. We are ever ready to do that in Anambra and that is the fact. “We have all the resources at our disposal to ensure that those who are eligible to vote perform their civic responsibilities without any molestation. “And nobody within or outside the state can stop the exercise,’’ he said.

The All Progressives Congress , APC chairmanship candidate for Ikotun/ Igando Local Council Development Area, Sakiru Alabi Balogun,  died in an auto crash along LASU/ Isheri road in Igando area of the state, Friday 21st 2017.The APC candidate whose campaign name was SAB , was reportedly putting finishing touch towards today’s election when the unexpected occurred.

The accident involved a LAWMA truck, a four-feet container and late Balogun’s Special Utility Vehicle jeep.

Some party members and his loyalists who were unaware of his demise, expressed shock when they were greeted with news of his demise on arrival at the polling units.
Some of them visited the deceased home to ascertain the authenticity of the news.
APC party members in the area were also at loss on what to do next.

One of them who gave his name simply as Lawal, said ” 
this is a big blow to us because he was the major contender. Why did death have to wait until this crucial moment to claim his life? If death could be appeased, one would have appealed to it to wait until after today’s election. Only God knows what actually transpired.

“When news of his death reached us, we held a meeting on the next step to take. But there is little or nothing we can do at the moment because it is already election day”.

His corpse has been deposited in the morgue.
