The Anambra State Governor, Chief Dr Willie Obiano FCA will formally unveil 1 million fit-for-purpose textbooks and academic resources donated by an England-based Charity, Ihezie Foundation for distribution to the State schools, colleges and higher institutions.
Chaired by a British-Nigerian industrialist, Aloysius Ihezie, Ihezie Foundation is a charity dedicated to helping people lift themselves out of poverty by providing wider educational, medical, social and economic opportunities. Since November, 2015, the foundation has shipped over 600, 000 educational books to schools in Africa; including Liberia, positively benefitting over one million students and young people.

Books are selected in line set quality guidelines that will be of value to students of all ages in targeted benefiting community. These educational resources provide apt insights into real-time unfolding in Arts and Sciences; including Agriculture, Business, Communication, Computation, Engineering, Law, Literatures, Management, Medicine, Surgery, Music, Technical and Vocational studies. For book relief intervention in Nigeria, Anambra State was the only State chosen for partnership and donation of educational materials worth millions of pounds after a very meticulous and strenuous process.
The State Ministry of Education had also sent two senior government appointees to London to ascertain the appropriateness and fitness of the Educational books. They are Owelle Mbaso, the Senior Special Assistant (Political) to the Governor and Lady Patty Offiah, the Senior Special Assistant (Primary Education) to the Governor. The worthwhile choice of partnering with Anambra State Ministry of Education was stimulated by the huge genuine investment seen to be making by Governor Willie Obiano in Education sector to ultimately offer a competitive Education comparable to any in the world.
As never-seen in the past administrations of the State or among his contemporary, Dr Willie Obiano had approached Education in the State with a bolder spirit and unwavering commitment to see that the learning needs of all are met through the equitable distribution of resources; and making Anambra one of the three top states in Nigeria with the lowest illiteracy rate. Today in Anambra, a holistic attention is given to the special needs (the physical-challenged) students, Adult education, technical and vocational education. Truly, the learning needs of all are been attended to.
Testimonies abound on what the Anambra State Government has done and still doing to change the stories in Education sector. International bodies like World Bank, UNICEF, UNIDO, UKAID; among others had applauded and concretely supports the initiatives of the State Ministry of Education led by Prof Kate Omenugha towards delivering on His Excellency’s mandates. Today, we have a UK-based charity, Ihezie Foundation on board and here to support the State with educational materials and resources intervention. With Anambra State schools and libraries fully stocked, this generation and generation yet-unborn are better prepared to take on their world.
This unbeatable milestone sets Anambra State as an Education destination and Research hub in sub-Sahara Africa. Needless to remark that in no distant time, men and women within and across Africa will travel miles to visit and to read and learn. Indeed, this is prosperity for Ndi Anambra.
Posterity will surely and favourably judge all those who made this private-public partnership work and see the light of the day.
Nelson Omenugha, a former Personal Assistant to Anambra State Hon. Commissioner for Education currently serves as Special Assistant (Research, Innovation and Strategy) to MD/CEO, Awka Capital Territory Development Authority.
