The Anambra State Government disassociates itself from the activities of illegal tax and levy collectors still operating in some parts of the state, despite their ban. In a statement issued today in Awka, Mr. Chuks Iloegbunam, the Director of Media Relations to Governor Willie Obiano, the government maintained that ban on taxes and levies on hawkers and wheel barrow pushers is subsisting, adding that Okada and Keke NAPEP riders are respectively to pay no more than N50 and N200 levies daily. The state government condemns in its entirety the criminal activities of the cabals behind the continued illegal collections and announces that a task force will soon swing into action to effectively contain the menace and embarrassment of the thugs engaging in the illegal collections.
The statement disclosed that the operatives of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra popularly known as the OCHA Brigade, have already arrested about thirty (30) persons involved in these extortions, and that they are due in court in the next few weeks.
It called on the citizenry to bluntly refuse to cooperate with any individual or group of persons demanding the payment of already banned taxes and levies from them. Such unscrupulous people should be reported to the Police, and other relevant law enforcement bodies.
The statement also charged the Anambra State Market Amalgamated Traders Association, ASMATA and its affiliated unions to assist the state government in curbing the activities of illegal tax and levy collectors and their impostors-collaborators in the various markets in Anambra state.
The state government further reassured Ndi Anambra that it would sustain its people-oriented policies and programmes, while providing more democracy dividends to the citizens in the 181 communities and 61 registered markets in Anambra State.
